This is now the rarest of the region’s storks, and mostly confined to Cambodia, where it inhabits open deciduous dipterocarp woodland with scattered pools and meadows, open floodplain and wet cultivated areas around the Tonle Sap, and sometimes mudflats in Kompong Som Bay. It is Near Threatened and increasingly rare in Asia, but stable in its population stronghold in Australia. The female has bright yellow eyes (the bird shown is a male). In flight the wings are white with a black covert bar. The juvenile has a dull grey-brown head, neck, upper body and wings, whitish underparts and lower back, and greyish or olive legs. The bird is usually solitary, occurring in pairs or trios, and rarely soars, unlike other storks.
